James S., a Black Fly Outfitter customer and friend just retruned from a trip to the Yucatan area of Mexico and shared this report with us. I reprint it here in his own words:
I visited Pesca Maya lodge on September 22-23. It was only two days of fishing, but it was absolutely great. I was staying in Playa Del Carmen, but escaped from the family for two days of fly fishing. When I arrived at the lodge, Jorge, the manager greeted me at the front door, took my rods and gear, and led me to a wonderful breakfast waiting at the table. The guides assembled my rods, picked a few flies, then we were off to the water. It was A+ service. During the two days of fishing I caught 10 bonefish, and 2 tarpon. We chased permit for a couple hours each day, but were unable to hook any. The bonefishing is crazy, they are absolutely everywhere. There are not many big ones, but if you want to catch fish after fish, I don’t know if it gets much better.
The second day we did a bit of a longer run to the west side of ascension bay in search of baby tarpon. We found two or three different spots that were holding great numbers of the 10-20 pounders. There were also some monster snook mixed in. It was truly a thrill to watch these fish follow a fly and smash it. I got broke off by three different fish, but successfully landed two.
- One of the two that I landed
I must have used 15 different tarpon flies, from deceivers, to toads, and just about anything bright that would get their attention. All bones were caught on a #6 pink charlie gotcha.
I did learn that the fish there like anything that is moving fast. Even the bonefish will turn out of there way if the fly was being stripped really fast and consistent and jumping along the bottom. Never stop moving the fly if a fish is trailing it. I probably missed quite a few due to inexperience. It was way different than redfish here in NE Florida. My two guides, Juan and Felipe, had the best sight fishing eyes I have ever witnessed. I feel pretty confident seeing fish, but they didn’t miss anything. There were a few times Juan would see fish from so far away, I didn’t believe him. As we would approach, sure enough, there would be 10-20 small bones 30 feet from us. The weather was great. It was a bit overcast on day one, but we overcame it and found plenty of bones who were willing to wave their tales at us. The lodge was great. It was really secluded and a great place to relax in the evening and talk fishing. It was perfect service, the food was great, and I would recommend it to anyone. There was only one negative, and that was the long drive , but once your there, it was great. I will hopefully try to make it back sometime for a longer stay sometime!!
